Surreal Muse
Kirsten Dunst by David LaChapelle
“I feel that we are living in a very precarious time, with environmental devastation, economic instability, religious wars waged, and excessive consumption amidst extreme poverty. I have always used photography as a means to try to understand the world and the paradox that is my life” – David LaChapelle.
Liv Tyler by David LaChapelle
I find these surreal photographs by David LaChapelle fascinating. His unique, shocking and often ironic style of photography has influenced modern culture in many ways – from fashion and advertising to fine art.
In addition to photography, LaChapelle is also known as video/commercial/film director. He has worked for Rolling Stone, Vogue, GQ and Vanity Fair throughout the years and has four published books of his photographs. All four books contain vivid and surreal portraits of the modern celebrities – from Marilyn Manson to Lady GaGa. He also directed advertisements for major brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Lavazza, Nokia, L’Oréal, Diesel and in 2004 – Elton John’s show, The Red Piano.
