Fur and leather
Sometimes I wish there was a real winter in Australia. So I could wear fur, leather and layers of wool. You might hate me for saying this but… I do miss my Black Diamond mink coat. You may not know that when its -50C outside there is nothing else other than real fur that can keep you warm. And there is nothing warmer, thinner and as lightweight as mink. It is an amazing material that has been used for centuries in northern countries with extreme cold. There is no need to wear real fur in Australia or any other country with a relatively warm climate. But in Siberia, with its hard core winters and blizzards, trust me, wearing fur is a matter of survival.
Yet women are women and even in the harshest cold they want to look their best. Luxury fur coats enter the scene when the necessity to stay warm merges with a desire to look hot. Even after many years spent away from white winters, I still adore the way real fur feels. So when I attended the Park Avenue PR Autumn/Winter 2012 collection showings, the chemistry between myself and these garments by Watson X Watson was immediate. I could not resist but to try them on!
P.S. I do love animals and I am against animal cruelty. The garments I’m wearing and have worn in the past are ‘cruelty free’…

Coming from Canada I completely agree with you that the natural materials that keep animals warm in a brutally cold climate are the best way for people to really stay warm too – I wear a fur hat to keep my head, cheeks, and ear warm and a goose down coat built for the Arctic. I don’t think fur should be worn gratuitiously either… and frankly it would look ridiculous to wear fur out in a Brisbane ‘winter’! For those of us who do still love the feel of real fur, I’d buy vintage rather than new (recycling balances out Karma, right?)
